Wilmington CARES Shawsheen Tech Rob Surette Partner To Create Ellen DeGeneres 14716Crayon Masterpiece

first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — Be kind. That’s the simple, yet powerful message artist Rob Surette was trying to convey with his latest project, which involved students from Wilmington Public Schools and Shawsheen Tech.“I spent three joy-filled days with over 100 super kids from grades 4-12 in Wilmington from the Shawsheen Valley Technical High School, Wilmington West CARES program, and the Wilmington Middle School,” said artist Rob Surette. “They were among my favorite kids ever…. They all has so much enthusiasm and respect for this project and they soaked up my positive messages like sponges.”Wilmington students were able to participate in Surette’s artist-in-residence program thanks to the efforts of Shawsheen Tech Guidance Counselor Angela Caira and West CARES Site Coordinator Kerin Osgood. The two formed a partnership six years ago where Shawsheen Tech Orientation Leaders help educate Wilmington’s youth on bullying prevention and mental health.“The project’s mission was to create a super eye-catching masterpiece together, which would stop people in their tracks and deliver the powerful message — “Be Kind,” which Ellen Degeneres is known for saying all the time,” explained Surette.“Ellen exemplifies the significance of being kind,” added Angela Caira. “She closes out her show every afternoon by reminding viewers to be kind to everyone… What better person to incorporate into our message of being kind?”The masterpiece, which will soon be on display at Wilmington Middle School, consists of 14,768 crayons and weights nearly 200 pounds. Surette spent more than 100 hours completing the project after students began working on it. Students were unaware of what the finish product looked like until the unveiling ceremony on Tuesday, May 28.Watch the unveiling, courtesy of Wilmington Community Television, below:——(NOTE: The cover photo is from the Wilmington CARES Facebook page.)Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. 2020 Gladiator gets the Easter Jeep Safari concept treatment

first_img 68 Photos Tags Honda RidgelineAgain keeping the status quo, the Honda Ridgeline maintains third place on the American Made Index. This crossover-that-looks-like-a-truck provides a better ride than a traditional pickup and gets an awesome lockable trunk right in the floor of the bed. And it doesn’t do the truck stuff too badly, either, as it’s able to carry 1,860 pounds of payload and tow 3,500 pounds. The Ridgeline is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 good for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. That is channeled through a six-speed automatic transmission with available all-wheel drive. It’s built in Lincoln, Alabama. Jeep CherokeeKeeping its top-of-the-list placement, the Jeep Cherokee is 2019’s most American-made car. Refreshed for 2019, the compact crossover now features more tech, better cargo space and a slightly tweaked look. It’s available in no fewer the nine trims, including the off-road specific Trailhawk and a fancy-pants Trailhawk Elite. For 2019, the Cherokee gets a new 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, though naturally aspirated I4 and V6 choices are also available. Regardless of engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission gets the power to the pavement — or dirt as the case may be. The Cherokee is made in Belvidere, Illinois. Yes, please. Jeep It wouldn’t be springtime without Fiat-Chrysler’s annual Easter Jeep Safari concepts. And hot on the heels of the 2020 Gladiator launch, Jeep revealed a pair of sketches Tuesday previewing two new Moab, Utah-ready takes on the Wrangler-based off-road truck. The first one, pictured above, appears to be a Jeep J6 redux, as evidenced by the badge on the lower quarter panel. That means we could be seeing a short-cab, long-bed Gladiator, maybe with some sort of optional over-the-bed canopy. Look closely and you’ll notice this concept doesn’t have hinges for the rear door, like on the production Gladiator.Easter Jeep Safari ConceptBig mud tires: an Easter Jeep Safari staple. Jeep Jeep’s second Gladiator concept uses the standard truck’s four-door arrangement. With its huge mud tires, this one appears to be some sort of off-road monster, and if previous Easter Jeep Safari concepts are anything to go on, we bet it’ll have some kind of big power upgrade under the hood.Jeep will officially reveal its 2019 concepts in the coming days, before they all head to Moab for the Easter Jeep Safari festivities from April 13 to 21. While you wait to see what Jeep has in store for this year, hop in the wayback machine to remember what the company rolled out for last year’s Easter Safari. 2019 Honda Ridgeline review: Light duty, heavy punch 49 Photos Review • 2020 Jeep Gladiator review: The Wrangler pickup truck that really hauls Jeep Acura MDXMoving up one slot to sixth place on the American Made Index is the non-hybrid variant of the Acura MDX. With its SH-AWD system, the MDX is one of the better handling midsize luxury crossovers, and for 2019 the company gives us the A-Spec treatment with a new front fascia and side skirts, 20-inch wheels, wider exhaust tips, unique gauges, a new steering wheel, carbon fiber trim and various Alcantara interior touches. However, both the standard and A-Spec models get a 3.5-liter V6 engine, rated for 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque going through a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Acura MDX is made in East Liberty, Ohio.  2019 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport loves to hustle Share your voice More about 2020 Jeep Gladiator 81 Photos 2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison: A tougher off-roader 26 Photos Honda PassportThe Honda Passport is a new (well, reborn) entry to both the Honda lineup and the American Made Index. This midsize crossover comes to the fray with great driving dynamics and plenty of tech like the standard Honda Sensing suite of active safety features. An available 8-inch touchscreen gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot.Under the hood is the stalwart 3.5-liter V6 producing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. However unlike the Ridgeline, the Passport sends that power through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Having said that, just like the Ridgeline, this is the only powertrain available. Honda’s largest crossover offers up nearly 84 cubic feet of cargo space. Honda’s 3.5-liter V6 engine shows up again, making a serviceable 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Touring and Elite trims get a nine-speed automatic transmission while lower trims have to make do with a six-speed auto. The Honda Pilot is made in Lincoln, Alabama. The top Denali trim gets standard heated and ventilated front seats as well as a heated steering wheel. Maximum payload capability is 1,665 pounds while max towing is a fairly healthy 7,600 pounds. The Canyon is available with the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, 3.6-liter V6 or 2.8-liter diesel as the Chevrolet Colorado. It’s also built in Wentzville, Missouri. 2019 Acura RDX A-Spec: Sharp handling, sharper looks 2019 Honda Odyssey offers plenty of room and features for families Acura RDXThe third-generation Acura RDX squeaks into the top ten list with larger proportions, plenty of interior space and better handling than its predecessor. While we’ve all been ogling the new mid-engine Corvette, it’s easy to forget what a performance bargain the current-generation ‘Vette is. From the base trim to the Grand Sport to the bonkers ZR1, the Corvette is an American icon.My preference is for the Grand Sport, which strikes a perfect balance between everyday drivability and canyon-carving performance. The 6.2-liter V8 puts out 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. You can get it with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, but the kicker is the borrowed chassis and aero parts from the beefier Z06. Like I said, perfect balance. The Corvette is made in Bowling Green, Kentucky. 2019 Honda Pilot Elite: A smoother, tech-rich crossover SUV Chevrolet ColoradoMaking its debut in the top 10 is the Chevrolet Colorado. Shown here in the tough ZR2 Bison off-road spec, the Chevy Colorado is an excellent truck and one of the two midsize pickups you can get with a diesel engine. Adding to the ZR2’s two-inch lift and front and rear locking differentials, the Bison gets beefier skid plates (trust me, that’s a good thing), steel bumpers and integrated recovery points. Heck, you can even get a snorkel.Base models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission, but a more popular choice is the 3.6-liter V6 gas engine with 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the 2.8-liter diesel pumps out 186 horsepower and a delicious 369 pound-feet of twist and is mated to a six-speed automatic. The Chevy Colorado is built in Wentzville, Missouri. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. These days, buying American doesn’t necessarily mean sticking with a US-based automaker. 0 Honda OdysseyThe feature-rich Honda Odyssey minivan also retains its number-two slot from last year’s list. While the 2019 model doesn’t see any changes from last, it’s still a darn good choice for families on the go with reconfigurable seats, Wi-Fi and an excellent rear-seat entertainment system. The Cabin Watch video system lets parents keep an eye on their little darlings without turning around in their seats, while Cabin Talk amplifies their voice so no yelling is required. The Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 rated for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Canada offers to take in Rohingya refugees

first_imgCanada`s prime minister Justin Trudeau poses for a photo during a community barbecue in La Malbaie, Quebec, Canada on 23 May 2018. Canada on Wednesday said it stands ready to take in Rohingya refugees, pledged significant aid. Photo: ReutersCanada on Wednesday said it stands ready to take in Rohingya refugees, pledged significant aid and called for the prosecution of those behind human rights atrocities in Myanmar.Foreign minister Chrystia Freeland told a news conference the asylum offer did not exclude the possibility of the Rohingya returning home, as most have said they wish for.But the current situation in Myanmar is not conducive to their safe return, she said.About 700,000 members of the Rohingya Muslim minority fled to Bangladesh, where they stay in refugee camps, after Myanmar’s military last August launched a military operation in Rakhine state. The violence has left a trail of torched villages in its wake, with allegations of murder and rape at the hands of troops and vigilantes.Myanmar has vehemently denied US and United Nations allegations of ethnic cleansing in the Buddhist-majority country.”The Rohingya have a right to return to their homes. But the conditions for their return currently do not exist,” Freeland said. “Persecution is still happening.”The minister declined to outline when or how many refugees might be taken in, saying it will be up to the UN refugee agency to coordinate the resettlement.Flanked by international development minister Marie-Claude Bibeau, she said Canada will work with other countries and the UN to come up with a plan.Myanmar and Bangladesh had agreed in November to begin repatriating Rohingya refugees to Myanmar but the process has stalled, with both sides blaming each other for the delays.Freeland said Ottawa will also work with the International Criminal Court to make sure there are prosecutions of those responsible for rights abuses and violations in Myanmar, which she called “ethnic cleansing” and “crimes against humanity.””It is important for the people responsible for this atrocity to understand that they will face justice, that the world community is watching… that there ultimately will be no place to hide,” she said.Canada’s pledge of Can$300 million (US$233 million) in aid over three years is on top of the Can$45.9 million in emergency assistance already provided since the start of 2017.According to a statement, it will go to improve living conditions for Rohingya refugees in camps and settlements, help mitigate the impact on their host Bangladesh and support other conflict-affected populations in Myanmar.last_img

10 games were most looking forward to in 2016

first_imgImage Credit: GameSpot Advertisement The holiday rush is over, which means most fans of video games have settled into a time of long, wintry hibernation when we catch up on everything we missed.Eff that. There’s a whole new year of video games to look forward to. Some stuff we haven’t seen, and won’t see for many months, but we know they’ll be big. Looking at you, Call of Duty, Destiny and Madden. Others we’ve seen a lot of and have talked about at length. That’s not what we’re about right now. Everything listed below is almost certain to be coming out in 2016, and the anticipation for each and every one has us perched on the edge of our seats. Even with a mountain of killer games to get through from the current year 2015 kicked all sorts of ass it’s never too early to get hype for what’s next. – Advertisement – Abzû Release date 2016 Platforms PlayStation 4, PC Abzû is proof-positive that games don’t need guns and violence to be compelling. Swimming around and interacting with marine life in beautiful settings is more than enough. Games that deliver a meditative experience are rare. Flower did it. Proteus did it. We expect Abzû to do it as well.Assassin’s Creed Chronicles:IndiaImage Credit: TwinFiniteRelease date Jan. 12, 2016 Platforms PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, PC This one’s a bit of a cheat, as Ubisoft has two Assassin’s Creed Chronicles games coming in 2016: one set in India and another in Russia. Both strip the series down to its core focus on platforming and throat-stabbing, allowing players to rewrite history in gorgeous 2.5D environments that hearken back to the glory days of arcade gaming.Below Release date 2016 Platforms Xbox One, PC Take the stiff challenge of Dark Souls and mash it together with the lo-fi aesthetics of The Legend of Zelda and you’ve got Below . Capy Games has been polishing this one off for ages, but it’s looking likely that we’ll finally see it launch in the new year.Cuphead Release date 2016 Platforms Xbox One, PC It might look like one, but this isn’t some lost Disney cartoon from the 1930s. Cuphead borrows the visual splendor of classic, hand-drawn animation and pairs it with a combination of shooty shooty arcade action and reflex-dependent fighting game sensibilities.Firewatch Release date Feb. 9, 2016 Platforms PlayStation 4, PC, Mac OS, Linux Firewatch, Henry is a lone-wolf fire lookout in 1989 Wyoming. His only link to the world is a radio, and the woman named Delilah whom he reports to. We’re not sure where the story takes these two, but we can’t wait to explore the beautiful landscape.HitmanImage Credit: YtImgRelease date Mar. 11, 2016 Platforms PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC The Hitman series was reborn in 2012 with the release of Absolution, which effectively turned each level into an assassin’s playground. The 2016 iteration, titled simply Hitman, seems to carry Absolution’s ideas forward with even more of a focus on variety and creative problem solving.Quantum Break Release date Apr. 5, 2016 Platforms Xbox One Quantum Break is certainly ambitious, fusing third-person gunplay and puzzle-solving with non-interactive, live-action “episodes” featuring familiar Hollywood faces like Shawn Ashmore and Dominic Monaghan. It also comes from the team behind the Max Payne and Alan Wake games, so you can expect tight, fast-moving gameplay to go along with what looks to be an engrossing story about time manipulation and science gone wrong.[related-posts]Batman: A Telltale Games SeriesImage Credit: ZiffDavisInternationalRelease date 2016 Platforms Unknown, probably everything Who knows what Telltale is cooking up for its recently revealed Caped Crusader series? We’re just happy to know that the team behind Tales from the Borderlands and The Wolf Among Us now gets to play around in Gotham City.Unravel Release date Feb. 9, 2016 Platforms PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC Unravel is an indie darling in the making. It’s a gorgeous 2.5D puzzle game where you guide an adorable yarn-thing named Yarny through a series of environments by unspooling its body and using the excess yarn to loop, swing, pull and climb. It’s both charming and eminently playable, the perfect mix to please a mainstream, all-ages crowd.Tom Clancy’s The DivisionImage Credit: UBIRelease date Mar. 8, 2016 Platforms PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC It’s easy to write off Tom Clancy’s The Division given the extended development time and multiple delays. But there’s something about this vision of post-apocalyptic New York City and the seemingly hook-y action-RPG gameplay that gives us hope. If The Division can stick to its 2016 launch and really plant the landing with a deep, absorbing experience, it could leave a lot of people happily surprised.[Mashable]last_img read more
