Southland Gives Back: Sam Houston State

first_imgEarlier this month, the organization delivered school supplies to Scott Johnson Elementary. The department’s 17 teams collected items to assist the school including Kleenex, scissors, glue sticks, hand sanitizer, No. 2 pencils, crayons, notebook paper and composition books. As part of the “Southland Gives Back” initiative, the Southland Conference will profile a community service outing from each of our 13 member institutions each weekday from Dec. 6 to 22. “To be part of a group that got to go and see things from the teachers and principals side of things was really neat,” sophomore men’s golfer Noah Steele said. “We arrived at the school and carried them all in. It was cool to see where they were doing and how they were going to impact in a positive way.” In addition to the collected items, the department also delivered 100 backpacks donated from Academy Sports & Outdoors. The retailer, and partner of Sam Houston athletics, presented the backpacks on the final day of the collection period. “We had each player offer what they could,” Steele said. “I walked into the LEC and to say something to Mrs. Thompson and saw all of the supplies outside her door. When you come together as a group, you make anything happen.” HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Sam Houston State athletic department is doing its part to give back this holiday season, thanks in large part to the efforts of its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). “Helping with the school supplies is something special,” football senior tight end Ragan Henderson said. “What we do is super important to families in need; especially for kids who don’t get a whole lot at home. We’re somebody extra just to put a smile on their face. If we can, we will.” In the case of men’s golf, the team worked together to collect hand sanitizer for the school. According to Steele, seeing all of the hard work pay off for a good cause was a fulfilling moment. SAAC is comprised of representatives from all sports in Bearkat Athletics and initiates community service efforts throughout the year. The group has contributed to local school-supply drives for the last 11 years, receiving a list of supplies needed to assist the school and children in resources needed.last_img read more

Baffert Gets Win #3,000 As Thousand Words Takes Grade III, $100,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes Three Quarters Of A Length; Ridden By Prat, Pioneerof The Nile Colt Gets 1 1/16 Miles In 1:43.64

first_imgBaffert Gets Win #3,000 As Thousand Words Takes Grade III, $100,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes Three Quarters Of A Length; Ridden By Prat, Pioneerof The Nile Colt Gets 1 1/16 Miles In 1:43.64WINNER TO RECEIVE 10 KENTUCKY DERBY QUALIFYING POINTS ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 1, 2020)–“You can’t make this up.”  That, according to Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, sums up his feelings in getting his 3,000th career win in today’s Grade III, $100,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita.  Named in honor of one of Baffert’s best all-time clients and an important prep to both the Santa Anita and Kentucky Derbies, today’s Lewis was taken in stylish fashion by favored Thousand Words, who won by three quarters of a length while getting 1 1/16 miles under Flavien Prat in 1:43.64.An attentive fourth at the rail, about three lengths off the lead as the field headed up the backside, Thousand Words continued to save ground to the top of the lane, when he split horses and eventually overhauled stablemate High Velocity a sixteenth of a mile out.“He ran very well,” said Prat.  “He put me in a good spot and he was comfortable down there.  He took the dirt (in his face) well and when I asked him to run, he really accelerated.”A winner of the Grade II Los Alamitos Futurity on Dec. 7, Thousand Words, who was purchased for $1 million at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, is now unbeaten in three starts and paid $3.20, $2.60 and $2.10 as the 3-5 favorite in a field of six sophomores.“Being stuck down on the inside, he got the worst of it,” said Baffert, who also collected his record eighth Lewis win. “Usually, a young horse like that, they won’t run that well and they don’t respond, but he’s got that big long stride and the further the better with him.  You could tell about the last 50 yards, he was really getting going.  He came back and he wasn’t even tired, so that is a good sign. He is progressing with every race and to win three in a row like that is pretty impressive.”Regarding his 3,000th win, Baffert, who had six horses entered today, said “I had a feeling it was gonna happen in this race.  I’ve had a lot of good people work for me through the years, the first 50 wins were probably the hardest–100 were life changers.  I feel very blessed and fortunate that I’ve been able to last in this business and do so well after coming from the quarter horse business.”Owned by Albaugh Family Stables, LLC and Spendthrift Farm, LLC, Thousand Words, who is out of the Pomeroy mare Pomeroy’s Pistol, picked up $60,000 for the win, increasing his earnings to $211,000.With the victory, Thousand Words receives 10 Kentucky Derby qualifying points, while the second, third and fourth place finishers will get 4, 2, and 1 point(s) each.Trained by Peter Eurton, Royal Act, in his first start on dirt, ran a huge race to be second, out-finishing High Velocity by a neck.  Off at 18-1 with Abel Cedillo, Royal Act paid $8.60 and $4.40.High Velocity, who set fractions of 23.65, 47.20, 1:11.44 and 1:37.14, held Tizamagician at bay by three quarters of a length and returned $2.40 to show with Joel Rosario up.last_img read more

Eales to be immortalised in bronze

first_imgThe 86-cap lock will be immortalised in bronze in recognition of his storied 11-year career in rugby, during which he captained both Queensland and Australia. The statue of Eales will capture him being lifted by another player in a lineout and is designed to enable fans to pose for pictures while holding his legs.It will be unveiled before Australia’s Rugby Championship Test against South Africa in September.Eales won two World Cups with Australia – one as captain in 1999 – and led Queensland to two Super Rugby championships. However, most of his rugby in Brisbane was played at Ballymore, having run out onto Suncorp Stadium only three times. He said he was honoured, if a little “uncomfortable” with the honour.”I stand here very reluctantly. If I was selecting the subject of the statue, it wouldn’t be me,” Eales said.”I played with so many great players for both Queensland and Australia and I’ve watched many others since I’ve retired – players who were far more influential on games than I was.”This is a rugby honour, far more than it is my honour.”Designed by sculptor Liam Hardy, the statue of Eales will stand at more than 3m tall and weigh approximately 300kg.It will be the fifth statue at Suncorp Stadium, with the other four – all of Queensland State of Origin icons – at the Caxton Street end.More could soon be on the way, with Queensland sports minister Michael de Brenni saying he would welcome suggestions for others – including from soccer, the other major tenant at Suncorp Stadium. It’s understood the Milton Street end, where the Eales statue will be positioned, will be set aside for statues of rugby and soccer greats.Three-time Brisbane Roar championship winner Thomas Broich and former Socceroos coach Frank Farina are among the popular choices.last_img read more

Australian tour a valuable learning experience

first_imgPNG defeated the Cairns Stingers U-18 team 80-62 on Sunday afternoon, but went down to the Cairns Marlins U-18 side 99-58 last night at the Fish Tank.“In the opening match I thought we did a great job defensively, which led to a lot of fast-break opportunities.“We were able to get stops and rebound the basketball, which triggered our up-tempo style of play,” said Khalu.“In the second game against some better opposition, we had a lot of defensive breakdowns and that hurt us early.“Once we got in that hole, it was always going to be a massive challenge to dig ourselves back out.“To the players’ credit though, they never gave up and kept on fighting and it was pleasing to see that PNG passion and pride until the final siren.“The players learned a lot from both games and that is what this tour was all about, creating opportunities for our PNG players to get international experience and exposure,” said Khalu.last_img read more

Bruno Fernandes’ agent travels to London and Ferdinand drops that the signing is imminent

first_imgAlso, they don’t seem to have competition. In his day Real Madrid was interested in the player, although the plan of Zidane It is not signing in January. The Tottenham He also asked about him, but the negotiations did not advance sufficiently. There is talk of a transfer of 55 million pounds, that is, almost 65 million euros, although red devils They intend to make the transfer cheaper by sending a soccer player from Lisbon to Lisbon. The only name that has come to the fore since Portugal It has been that of the Argentine defender, Red frames, but according to the British media that option is totally ruled out.Meanwhile, the former United player, Rio Ferdinand, always at the center of the controversies related to the English club (also acts as a commentator on television), He has published a tweet that will excite fans of the team, in which he drops that the signing of Bruno Fernandes in this winter market is imminent. The injuries of Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba they almost force United to hire a replacement of guarantees if they don’t want to lose the train to Europe. In fact, both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Mike Phelan approached on Sunday to watch the match against Porto, in which his team was defeated, one more proof that the interest is real: “I’m starting to think of alternatives without Bruno not staying with us. I hope it doesn’t happen, but in Portugal, unfortunately we can’t keep the best players for a long time and he’s the best in the league.”he said recently Silas, Sporting coach. Without going any further, yesterday their representatives and the president, Frederico Varandas, moved to London to have a meeting with Ed Woodward and Matt Judge, according Daily Mail. Mendy and Militao begin to justify 100 million

first_imgMilitao and Mendy begin to justify the 100 million they cost last summer (50 each). The two have responded in high games and both will have a new test next Saturday against Sevilla at the Bernabéu (4:00 pm, Movistar LaLiga). The central points to holder for the loss due to Sergio Ramos injury (sprained ankle) while the side also has options after his good performance in the Spanish Super Cup, when he started both games.Mendy, right now, can be considered a headline for Zidane: He is the tenth player who has played the most minutes in the white team. He accumulates 1,222 ’against the 825’ of Marcelo, his rival for the position. Militao, meanwhile, has established itself in the role it came to occupy: third central. It takes 632 ’against the 348’ of Nacho, the other substitute (Varane and Ramos are untouchable for Zidane) in that position. Nacho adds so few minutes because he suffered a sprained knee that had him apart for eleven games, but it is also true that much of his minutes he played as left side when the casualties of Mendy and Marcelo came together. Militao was confirmed in Getafe, a difficult field in which Madrid left the goal to zero (0-3) with a great performance of his. On the other hand, Sevilla is a rival to which Mendy already knows what it is to shine. In the first leg, those of Zidane returned with a valuable 0-1 from Sánchez Pizjuán and the French side was one of the protagonists By drying Jesús Navas, the player who puts more centers in LaLiga. It is precisely that virtue that is convincing Zidane. So indisputable is how decisive Marcelo is in attack as his defensive gaps are. The rivals took advantage of their offensive vocation to look for tickle Madrid. With Mendy the team loses danger above, but it becomes a rock behind. Therefore, if Zizou decides to protect himself against the offensive capacity of Sevilla in attack, Mendy has many ballots to be a holder …last_img read more
