Former Men’s Soccer Standout Darrin MacLeod Signs with Swope Park of USL

first_imgKANSAS CITY, Mo. – Former Drake men’s soccer standout goalkeeper Darrin MacLeod signed a professional contract with the Swope Park Rangers of the United States Soccer League, the club announced Wednesday, Feb. 22. “I want to thank Drake University for their support and guidance throughout my collegiate career,” MacLeod said. “The institution as a whole helped develop me as a person, pushing me to be the best version of myself each and every day in every facet on life. I also have to give a special thank you to the men’s soccer program as it helped to develop me as a player. With the knowledgeable coaching staff and strong team culture I was always challenged to get outside of my comfort zone and stretch myself as a player. I am excited to see what the future holds as I begin my professional career.” MacLeod is the all-time leader in Drake history in games (76), minutes (6940:22), saves (308), shutouts (19) and wins (33). He earned All-Missouri Valley Conference and All-MVC Scholar-Athlete honorable mention accolades this past season. MacLeod helped the Bulldogs win the 2015 MVC Tournament and then advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after its road win at Kentucky in the first round. MacLeod, who is from Waterloo, Ontario, Canada has extensive experience from the Premier Development League, where he competed for both K-W United FC in the 2013 and 2014 seasons, and last summer for the Toronto FC Academy where he made 47 saves over 10 appearances. “We are very excited for Darrin as he takes this next step in his soccer career,” said Drake head coach Gareth Smith. “As a Bulldog, Darrin demonstrated an exceptional work rate and dedication to high standards both on and off the field, which has helped provided a great platform for him to make the transition into the professional ranks. I can’t wait to help bring this team back to the USL Cup Final and continue to grow as a player with such a great club.” As a sophomore, MacLeod led the MVC in save percentage at .809 and earned MVC Defensive Player of the Week honors four time in his career. He received the MVC State Farm Good Neighbor award his junior campaign. MacLeod is the second former Drake men’s soccer standout to sign a professional contract with a USL team in the past two seasons.
