A drinking spree which turned deadly landed a 37-year-old man before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday slapped with the capital offence of murder. The charge against Dexroy Garraway known as “Bam-Bam” stated that on May 22, 2019, at Takutu Landing, Puruni Road, Mazaruni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), he murdered Eric Nurse called “Black boy”.Dexroy GarrawayGarraway of Lower Enterprise Pomeroon was not required to plea to the indictable charge when it was read to him by Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.Police Prosecutor Shellon Daniels told the court on Tuesday that on May 22, 2019, Garraway was consuming alcohol at a shop in the company of Nurse when the accused went into a room that was occupied by a female. According to the prosecutor, the woman raised an alarm and shouted for help and Nurse ran to her rescue.The prosecution is contending that Nurse approached Garraway and dragged him out of the room when a scuffle ensued. A short while after, the woman exited the room and saw Nurse lying face down, with injuries to his body. The man was picked up and rushed to a nearby medical centre but was pronounced dead on arrival.Garraway was subsequently arrested and questioned, during which he allegedly confessed to stabbing Nurse eight times. The court further heard that the accused was recently released from prison after serving two years for a wounding offence. Garraway was remanded to prison and the case will continue at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on June 5, 2019.
