Having assumed control of Reggae Sumfest in 2016, just two months before show time, Josef Bogdanovich pulled out all the stops to make the annual event a success. This time around, the jocular American anticipates a much better planned festival which runs from July 16-21 in Montego Bay. Most of the dates are parties leading up to the dancehall-dominated July 20-21.“For the little time we had last year we did pretty well. This year, we’ve started since January which means we’re well ahead of the game,” Bogdanovich told CNW.Sumfest launch parties have taken place in Kingston and Montego Bay. The six-day festival takes place in the latter where it has been held since its inception in 1993.A Beach Party, cruise (Sumfest at Sunset), All White Party, Retro Block Party and Heavyweight Sound Clash will be held throughout the tourist city before the main events, the perennially popular Dancehall Night(s) at Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex.Bogdanovich promises no clashes at Sumfest this year, even though several artists at odds with each other, will be on the bill.“It will be a real peace and love, joyous vibe. That’s something fundamental to reggae,” he said.Dancehall Night One will have Alkaline, Mavado, Aidonia, Dexta Daps, Ding Dong and Bounty Killer, among others. The following night, Sizzla, Sean Paul, Kabaka Pyramid, Beenie Man and Richie Stephens and The All Star Ska Band, are among the headliners. The California-born Bogdanovich started Downsound Records in the 1990s. That label made a name with acts like Nanco, Fantan Mojah, DYCR and Harry Toddler.Until last year, Reggae Sumfest was promoted by Summerfest Productions, a group of Montego Bay businessmen.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The former Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde, has praised Jamaica for the “remarkable” accomplishments under its financial arrangements with the Fund, which have now concluded.“Through two programmes, two different administrations with very strong commitment, you have managed to actually create jobs, to reduce the unemployment level to the lowest ever, you’ve reduced debt by 50 percentage points of gross domestic product (GDP), you’ve managed to stabilize inflation and you’ve managed to accumulate reserves,” she said in a recorded message. The message was played during a press conference at the Office of the Prime Minister earlier this week as the IMF completes its sixth and final review mission under the Precautionary Stand-By Arrangement (SBA). Lagarde said the achievements were not only due to good macroeconomic policies but due largely “to your own creativity, the way you have managed to embark everybody on that journey”.“A lot has been achieved and more needs to be done. Transforming the public sector and encouraging private investments are tasks that are still there and that I am sure you can achieve as well,” she said. For his part, Director of the Western Hemisphere Department of the IMF, Dr. Alejandro Werner, noted that over the last three years, Jamaica’s sustained commitment to a homegrown economic reform programme has resulted in significant dividends for the people of Jamaica.Budget discipline, combined with a reorientation of the fiscal system, including the shift from direct to indirect taxation pioneered by this Government, has helped put public debt on a sustained downward path and also generate a fiscal and tax system that is more conducive to investment, growth and employment,” he said.In addition, Dr. Werner pointed out that proactive liability management, as evidenced by the latest successful swap of existing bonds at a relatively low yield, has also helped ensure that Jamaica can reduce debt to 60 percent of GDP by fiscal year 2025/26, in line with the provisions of the Fiscal Responsibility Law.Dr. Werner said the IMF also welcomes the Government’s ongoing commitment to expanding social assistance for the vulnerable, as well as the significant efforts that have been made to build monetary and foreign exchange market institutions.“We are convinced that all these policies will support private-sector development and increase investment opportunities in Jamaica that will lead to increased employment, growth and the continued reduction of poverty within the next five years.”Dr. Werner noted, that achieving Jamaica’s considerable potential requires further attention to structural reforms to address crime, enhance access to finance, support agricultural resilience, and invest in education and healthcare.Jamaica’s current programme with the IMF is scheduled to officially end in November. The country will, however, continue to benefit from technical assistance, and the Jamaica office will be maintained for an additional two years.Jamaica’s latest relationship with the IMF started in 2013 when the country entered into a four-year US$932-million Extended Fund Facility (EFF).This arrangement ended in 2016 when it was replaced by a US$1.6-billion Precautionary Stand-By Arrangement.
The police say that the analysis of the samples proved very difficult and challenging. Hence, more specialized DNA analysis methods were sought, which impacted the ability to provide closure to families in a timelier fashion. Months after the powerful storm devastated sections of the territory, the service, to be led by religious leaders from the Abaco Christian Council and the wider Christian community will be held. According to Cartwright the ceremony will be a time for all to “remember the impact Hurricane Dorian has had on our communities and as good Christian people pay our final respects”. According to Archdeacon Keith Cartwright, there will be a graveside ecumenical service followed by a burial, taking into consideration the necessary COVID-19 protocols. Hurricane Dorian hit Abaco and Grand Bahama in September 2019. It was the strongest storm to hit The Bahamas. The service was previously postponed at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, despite some delays within the operations of laboratories internationally, the Royal Bahamas Police Force has indicated that collaboration with a highly recognized laboratory, very skilled in dealing with DNA sampling, is proving good results. NASSAU, Bahamas– An Ecumenical Service and burial for loved ones who lost their lives during Hurricane Dorian will take place in The Bahamas on Friday. “We have been advised by Coroner Jeanine Weech-Gomez that best practices have been used in number identification of each set of remains. The remains are numbered, the sealer caskets are numbered, and the graves will be numbered with weatherproof plates. This system will assist in providing certified death certificates. Those numbers match the DNA sampling of each decedent. When the forensic exercise is complete each family will be afforded the choice of family memorialization.” The 55 Hurricane Dorian victims in Abaco will be individually interred, although forensic DNA profiling analysis is ongoing. It is anticipated that receipt of some results is expected soon. CMC

Plus, we can effectively measure across channels to fully understand the results of our marketing efforts and optimise for the future.”Mike Sands, Signal CEO, added: “Brands realise that to retain customers and drive loyalty, they need a new approach to identity. Tools and solutions that hold customer data hostage don’t cut it anymore.“Marketers want control, flexibility, and knowledge from a strategic identity foundation that can power all customer experiences. With Signal’s solution, clients are gaining visibility of more known customers, reducing the cost of reaching those customers, and eliminating the friction caused by using multiple vendors.”Sahil Anand, Director of Product Management at Quotient, a digital promotion and media company, commented: “Quotient helps CPG brands and retailers engage shoppers with relevance to deliver experiences that nurture loyalty and increase sales.“Signal is the connective tissue that stitches together in-store and online customer data to create Quotient’s strategic identity layer. Because the graph is always accessible, brands can immediately act on purchase intent signals and measure the effectiveness of their efforts based on transaction data.” UKGC forms three groups to address safer gambling standards January 18, 2020 Submit
EGBA calls for enhanced collaboration on consumer rights August 11, 2020 Share StumbleUpon KSA issues ‘conduct warning’ following covid marketing breaches July 28, 2020 The gambling industry has been left out in the cold by the European Commission, which has announced today that it will be focusing its time and effort on only the most serious infringements of EU law – meaning that all the currently pending infringement proceedings involving gambling have now been dropped.Challenging EU law has been a very active area for betting operators over the past 15 years – Stanleybet in particular has been very successful in campaigning against market barriers – so for the sector now to be essentially ignored by the EU is surprising. The Remote Gambling Association (RGA) said it views this decision as ‘highly questionable’, especially as it is based on and not on any legal assessment of the merits of the cases. Clive Hawkswood, CEO of the RGA, said: “The existence of infringement proceedings and the Commission’s subsequent pressure on Member States to comply with EU law has helped with the introduction of many effective and sensible regulatory regimes for online gambling across Europe. However, many other cases have been left to languish for several years and many unlawful restrictions to the free provisions of services have yet to be addressed. In those circumstances we are of course dismayed that, with regard to the Internal Market, the Commission has effectively abandoned our sector and given a free pass to non-compliant regimes.“However, we will continue to work with Member States with the aim of establishing EU-compliant regimes that would benefit European consumers, the online gambling industry, and national Governments.”Maarten Haijer, Secretary General of the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) noted: “Today’s decision by the Commission is unhelpful in the fight against unregulated non-EU gambling services. National courts will continue to be confronted with gambling cases and the CJEU will continue to rule on questions from national courts. This decision sends a signal that the Juncker Commission fails to appreciate the need to underpin its ambitious Digital Single Market programme with solid enforcement and guidance from the Commission itself, taking its role as guardian of the treaties seriously.“The question is not whether the Commission should create an internal market for online gambling or not, but the idea that regulatory and EU law challenges of an internet sector like online gambling can be resolved by member states individually, shows a baffling lack of understanding of the digital consumer by the Juncker commission.”The RGA argues that current laws and regulations that unfairly restrict or bar online gambling in many EU Member States represent blatant breaches of EU law, adding that by taking this sweeping action to drop all of those cases the European Commission has ignored the need for more enforcement effort in a field that is inherently of a crossborder nature and cannot be resolved solely at national level.Haijer added: “EU member states such as Italy and Denmark have set an example in designing a gambling framework which works: strict regulation and controls in combination with a level of taxation which encourages recourse to properly supervised services and a high level of consumer protection. However, we note that the gambling sector is not alone in complaining about the inaction of the Commission when certain other member states refuse to allow non-domestic services to operate on their territory. Today’s decision to close the cases does not change the legal situation and – as the Commission states itself – cannot be read as any form of “greenlighting” existing breaches of EU law in the Member States’ laws.” Related Articles Share Andrea Vota named director general of Jdigital July 24, 2020 Submit

The EU had requested that the Cypriot government change its gambling policy which was deemed to favour Greek gambling operator OPAP as its preferred state-partner.Last September, EU member state Malta, had requested a ‘statuary review’ of Cyprus proposed gambling laws, seeking to consider whether Cyprus had created any barriers to free movement of goods and services in violation of the EU’s existing business framework.Led by the National Betting Authority (NBA), the Cypriot government states that its latest EC submission is consistent and systematic, creating regulations that provide an equal treatment of gambling operators joining its market.“The draft law also provides for the strict regulation, control and supervision of the operation of betting shops used for the provision of gambling services, as well as for the strict regulation of the organisation, operation and provision of gambling services”.Under the proposed framework, licensed bookmakers would pay a tax of 10% on net revenue generated from services, combined with a further 1% levy on net revenue which will be contributed to responsible gambling initiatives.
