Equity markets boosting assets at Dutch investment funds, regulator says

first_imgThe combined assets of Dutch investment funds increased by 4.5%, or €29.3bn, to a new record of almost €700bn over the second quarter, due in particular to rising equity markets, according to De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB).The Dutch regulator said the total quarterly return on investments, including interest and dividends, was 4.2%, the highest since the first quarter of 2012.Equity holdings increased by 7.8%, on the back of a 5.6% return on investments, it said, adding that net investment in equity amounted to €3.6bn, including €1.8bn in emerging markets.Investment in property funds increased by €1.2bn. By contrast, investment institutions divested €2.4bn from fixed income funds, €200m from mixed funds and €900m from hedge funds, continuing divestment strategies put in place during the first quarter, the DNB said.Despite the divestment from fixed income funds, the asset class returned 3.2% over the period. The DNB also reported positive results for property funds (2.8%), hedge funds (2.2%) and “other” funds (€5.1%).The regulator said the level of assets had climbed to a record level for the fourth consecutive quarter.last_img read more

It’s over – Bolt makes dreaded Olympic farewell

first_imgHis 9.58 record at the world championships in Berlin in 2009 was an even bigger sensation. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil | AFP |  Factfile on Usain Bolt after his victory in the 4x100m relay with Jamaica at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics Friday: 2015 – World Championships – 100m, 200m, 4x100m gold At the world youth championships in 2001, he was entered for the 200m but failed to make the finals. His coaches were often frustrated at his reluctance to train and his practical jokes. On top of his record-equalling nine athletics gold medals, Bolt, who will be 30 on Sunday, is confident, relaxed and supremely connected with the crowds he attracts wherever he goes. When Usain Bolt crosses the finish line and starts pounding his chest, it resonates with the public around the world. Career highlights: Bolt set his first 100m world record (9.72sec) in May 2008 in New York. The Jamaican then stormed the Beijing Olympics with his first 100m, 200m, relay treble. The world was forced to take notice of his chest-beating. Share on: WhatsApp Weight: 94kg (207lb) “I enjoy showing them and giving them the joy I get out of doing this because they give me the energy to do it so I’m always hungry.” 2009 – World Championships – 100m, 200m, 4x100m gold But at the age of 15 he was already 1.96 metres (6ft 5in) and at the world junior championships in 2002 he won the 200m. He is one of just a handful of athletes to have won world titles at junior, youth and senior levels. 2016 – Olympic Games – 100m, 200m gold, 4x100m gold At the 2013 world championships in Moscow, with heavy rain falling, Bolt mimed putting up an umbrella and appropriately lightning bolts lit up the sky around the stadium. The after-effects of a leg injury meant he did not get past the first round in the 200m at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where his Rio rival Justin Gatlin won the 100m. Name: Usain St. Leo Bolt 2011 – World Championships – 200m, 4x100m gold After completing the ‘triple triple’ of Olympic sprint titles in Rio on Friday, Bolt summed it up by saying: “There you go. I’m the greatest.” Athletics bosses must wish he could stay longer. Bolt has said he will hang up his spikes after next year’s world championships in London. “One day, I left him on the bed and when I came back he was close to falling off, so from here I was saying, ‘What kind of child he is?” she recalled. Bolt has maintained his common touch with the crowds through all this. With each major win he has deflected attention away from bad news for track and field. In Beijing it was the doping controversy surrounding women’s sprint star Marion Jones and her boyfriend Tim Montgomery. Gatlin was unable to defend his title as he was serving an initial eight-year doping ban, which was reduced to four. The Olympics is going to miss the Lightning Bolt pose that has lit up the last three Games at a time when athletics desperately needs a hero. Bolt has made it clear why he feels obliged to give something back to the spectators. Two Chinese nationals arrested after taking photos of US Naval Air Station

first_imgAuthorities have arrested two Chinese nationals who allegedly snuck onto a Naval base and began taking photos of several structures. The incident occurred over the weekend at the Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida. An FBI affidavit reported that two men, Yuhao Wang and Jielun Zhang, drove up to the main entrance of the base and asked to enter. A security guard then informed the men that they were only allowed on the base if they had a military ID.Despite being turned away, the men still somehow drove onto the base but were later apprehended after someone noticed them taking photos of several structures on the grounds.Wang and Zhang both had their initial court hearings on Monday and are due back in court on Friday for their bail hearings. The arrests comes just weeks after two other Chinese nationalist were separately arrested for taking photos of structures on the same base.A Chinese man named Zhao Qianli pleaded guilty last year after he was caught illegally taking photos on the base. He has since been sentenced to a year in federal prison.A fourth Chinese man, Lyuyou Liao,  was also arrested for illegally taking photos of structures on the base. He is currently being held without bond, however,  his lawyer argues that Liao was just taking photos while on vacation and that all the evidence collected barely points to a crime.last_img read more

Police: Palm Beach County Teacher Asked Underage Student for Sex

first_imgOfficials with the Palm Beach County School District Police Department say a teacher is under arrest and accused of asking a teenage student if she wanted to have sex with him.According to the arrest report, 51-year-old Dean James is a vocational and business education teacher.A 16-year-old student told police that James kept her after class on Nov. 21 of last year and asked her, “Do you want to have sex with me?”The student says she replied, “No.” She also claims that James touched her shoulder, which she pushed away before leaving the classroom. In addition, the teen told authorities she was not comfortable talking with James due to comments he had previously made to her.She recorded their phone conversation.A detective listened to the recording and heard the teacher ask the student, “Do you want me to touch you?”James apologized and said, “I shouldn’t have said that, I’m sorry,” the arrest report states. When police interviewed James the day after the classroom incident, he told them the student has a discipline problem and “he has been planning to have her removed from his class because she yells out, dances around, twerks, facetimes her boyfriend, as well as other disruptive behaviors.”His arrest report adds that when police asked James what his intentions were when he asked the girl, “Do you want to have sex?” he replied that “he was trying to warn her [REDACTED] about her behavior. He said he was not trying to be with her, he was asking her why she was behaving the way she was. He said he was trying to understand if she was trying to have sex with him.”James claims that he never touched the student. However, he later admitted to police that he was attracted to the 16-year-old, and she was allegedly attracted to him.“He admitted that he was attracted to her, and asked her if she wanted to have sex. He admitted that he thought about meeting with her outside of school for dinner and that he asked her if she wanted to do that,” the arrest report explains. The arrest report goes on to say that James called the student to his desk a week before and asked her out to dinner, as well as information about where she lives. On Nov. 18, James told the teen, “You’re getting fat, what you been doing? Have you been having sex?” the arrest report continues.School district police determined after a lengthy investigation that “Dean James solicited the victim for sexual conduct, for a relationship of a romantic nature, and for lewd conduct.”James was arrested and booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on Wednesday for an offense against a student by an authority figure. He bonded out a few hours later. The School District says he has been employed there since Feb. 14, 2018.A spokesperson adds that James was reassigned to a position that does not have any contact with children during the investigation.last_img read more

R-e-s-p-e-c-t

first_imgThe Pittsburgh Steelers were in the midst of playing the Buffalo Bills in the very hot and humid upstate “city” of Orchard Park, NY just a snowball’s throw away from the beautiful winter wonderland city of Buffalo. What makes this city/ski resort unique is that on many occasions during the winter months the citizens have to use skis and snowshoes not just for pleasure but just to get to work and to carry-out other essential duties such as shopping for food and water, etc.According to legend, Buffalo, formerly known as Buffalo Creek, received its name from the creek or “crik” (as Pittsburghers’ would call it) that flows through it. However, the origin of the creek’s name is unclear leaving several myths flying around. Early French explorers reported the abundance of buffalo on the south shore of Lake Erie, but their presence on the banks of Buffalo Creek is still a matter of debate. Early Super Bowl scouts reported the existence of a team that would be considered a very elite team because of four Super Bowl appearances yet have no Lombardi Trophy’s to show for it. Even so even the team from the city by the “crik” deserves some r-e-s-p-e-c-t.Now while we are on the subject of respect, there was not a lot of this intangible “positive” quality “vibe” flowing forth from Steelers “elite” quarterback Ben Roethlisberger toward the “keepers of the playbook” patrolling the coaches press box and sidelines. Roethlisberger was less than jubilant in regards to the “carrier pigeon” type of communication that was used to send a play in to him. As a result the Black and Gold had 12 men on the field and were subsequently penalized for the miscue placing the rock on the Pittsburgh one yard line. Shortly after the penalty was called, Big Ben was “swollen” and began gesturing over at the Steelers bench. Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin did not appear to be in a partying mood after the gaffe deep in the Steelers end as well but seemed to understand the frustration of his quarterback. Tomlin said afterward, “I’ve been looking at Ben going on six years now, I’m not surprised by it.” By what, Roethlisberger’s juvenile display of emotion?Boys and girls on how many occasions have we witnessed “Big” Ben call a not so cerebral time out because of a lack of understanding the situation at hand; either leaving the Steelers with not enough time for a victory rally or providing their opponent more than ample time to start and complete a victory rally of their own? If Mike Tomlin had been as visual displaying his displeasure with Roethlisberger after one of his many blunders, let’s just say he might be exiled from the sidelines of the NFL and coaching the new European football powerhouse the “Siberian Huskies” in some unknown region of the Ukraine. You cannot publicly on national television call out your teammates, coaches or management if they occasionally make a mistake because it does not set a very good precedent. When you are in a leadership position you must always remember, “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”May I call your attention to a similar but much more important game? The Steelers were at the Indy Colts playing in the 2005 playoffs. The Colts faced a fourth and short. Indy Head Coach Tony Dungy had the Colts punting team poised to take the field when his star quarterback Peyton Manning broke the huddle and waved the punt team back to the sidelines. The Colts were successful on their attempt but if Manning had failed, Dungy would have shouldered all of the blame. But as fate would have it Manning succeeded and gathered all of the glory, well at least until the Colts were eventually defeated.Coaches are supposed to coach and players are supposed to play. When that ceases to be true, the patients may be poised to take over the asylum. Was it Aretha Franklin in her fine days sang; “What you want, baby I got it. What you need, you know I got. All I ask you is for a little respect.” Not a huge amount, not a lot but just a little bit of respect.Respect is not given it is earned. Mike Tomlin has earned my respect. I did not freely give it. I have watched him be vilified in regards to small decisions that he has made, while simultaneously viewing other coaches being handed the keys to new cars for accomplishing significantly less. Coach Tomlin is often accused of conducting press conferences that a few media types may consider a bit forced. I suspect he does most of his talking in the film room. As the late Don Cornelius might say; peace, love and so…….ul, later.(Aubrey Bruce can be reached at [email protected] or 412-583-6741.
