What The Hell Just Happened At Google?

first_img8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Tags:#Google#web Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… antone gonsalves Related Posts center_img The search giant was supposed to report earnings after the close of business today. Instead it jumped the gun and shocked Wall Street and Silicon Valley with a huge miss on both earnings and revenues. Then news broke that the announcement itself was a mistake. What the hell is going on in Mountain View? There’s only one thing worse than missing your numbers – and that is missing your numbers and not even being able to report that news correctly. That’s what happened today at Google, and the snafu has created the impression, once again, of a powerful, dangerous company careening out of control.Google Earnings Off, And Off ScheduleThe fiasco began early Thursday morning Pacific time, when Google accidentally released its third-quarter earnings ahead of schedule. The results were supposed to come out at the end of the day.Worse yet, the earnings were terrible – so bad that the stock plummeted 9% within 20 minutes after the release of a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.Google’s profit was $9.03 a share, far below analyst expectations of $10.65, according to a poll by Thomson Reuters. What is behind the profit miss is a $151 million adjusted operating loss from Motorola. The loss amounted to 6% of the unit’s revenue. The reason for the operating loss at Motorola is not clear. That will likely be addressed at a conference call with financial analysts scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Pacific time.Worse yet, revenues were also off – at $11.3 billion they were well below the $11.9 billion that Wall Street had been expecting. The next shoe dropped a few minutes later when Google announced that the release itself had been a mistake. The press release filed with the SEC contains the note “pending Larry quote.” Apparently, “Larry” refers to Chief Executive Larry Page. In other words, Google was holding a spot in the release where it would pop in a quote from Page, but then someone, somehow, went ahead and hit “send,” and put the release out before it was completed.Sure, it’s not the end of the world. But the combination of bad news and inept rollout of that bad news is not what Google needs right now. The $40 billion company is under pressure from antitrust regulators in the U.S. and Europe. Just last week reports surfaced that FTC investigators were moving closer to launching an antitrust case against Google.Google Has Other ProblemsGoogle faces lots of other huge, existential threats. The company was founded in 1998 for a version of the Internet and the Web as it existed back then. But things have changed dramatically in the past decade – as much Internet activity has shifted to walled gardens, like Facebook, and to mobile devices and apps – worlds that Google does not dominate.Google – and other companies that were originally built for the Web – face a big challenge as users move to mobile devices. That’s because ads on mobile devices are much less lucrative than on the Web.Then there’s Motorola, the ailing handset maker that Page bought for $12.5 billion last year. The deal was announced with much fanfare, but so far Google doesn’t seem to know what to do with its new toy. Meanwhile, the unit is bleeding money and putting out ho-hum products based on Google’s Android operating system. In September Motorola announced three Droid Razr devices — its first new handsets as a Google-owned company – that were found to be “nothing groundbreaking” by ReadWriteWeb.The good news is that while Motorola is a mess, the rest of Google’s business appears on track. Ad revenue, which accounts for the majority of the search engine’s income, rose by 16% in the most recent quarter, as paid clicks soared by 33% from the same period last year and 6% from the previous quarter. The accidental earnings release was not the only snafu of the day. Even as Google was botchiing its earnings release, the company also accidentally released news about a new Chromebook machine before completing the announcement press conference.Whoops.Not a great day for Google. No doubt there’s a lot of shouting going on in Mountain View right now. And today’s earnings call ought to be pretty darn entertaining.Image courtesy of Shutterstock. first_imgMan City boss Guardiola: I want to win everything; ask Klopp why he selected that teamby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveManchester City boss Pep Guardiola insists he always takes Cup competitions seriously.City meet Burton Albion in the first-leg of tonight’s Carabao Cup semifinal.”I prefer it to be in the four competitions as far as possible,” Guardiola said. “When Wigan put us out of the FA Cup last season, I was sad. I take the cups seriously.”Guardiola believes City can handle all four competitions providing he rotates his side carefully. Jurgen Klopp attempted a similar trick on Monday night but suffered defeat at Wolves, which leaves Liverpool with a lighter load. The Premier League champions could end up playing eight more domestic matches than Liverpool should they reach the Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals.”I’m not involved in what my opponents do,” Guardiola said. “The reality for Jurgen is he knows exactly what happened.”I’m not the right person to judge what the others do because I don’t like it when others judge our decisions.”You cannot survive in any league in the world fighting for the title with just 12 or 13 players. It’s impossible. You need a bigger squad and every player has to be a top player. “Since I arrived we’ve played Manchester United with a lot of young players (in the 2016 League Cup). Friday, former Georgia tight end Benjamin Watson, who plays for the New Orleans Saints, was forced to wear Alabama gear to pay off a bet with former Crimson Tide running back Mark Ingram, now his teammate.Alabama blasted Georgia last Saturday – so the wager is pretty obvious here. No, I’m not confused…but I had to pay my debt to @MarkIngram22. Also Read – Uddhav bats for ‘Sena CM’The disputed land in Umbha and Saphi villages also be transferred back and registered in the name of gram sabha, he said, while announcing that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) will look into the matter. Adityanath said departmental proceedings have been initiated against Sonbhadra District Magistrate Ankit Kumar Agrawal and Superintendent of Police Salman Taj Patil for taking “one-sided decision” against the villagers. Directives have been issued to attach Agrawal and Patil to the Personnel Department and the DGP Headquarters, respectively, he said. S Ramalingam has been made the new district magistrate of Sonbhadra, while Prabhakar Chaudhary is the new superintendent of police, officials said. DG SIT R P Singh will be monitoring the work of the SIT,” the chief minister said. In July, 10 people were killed and 28 injured in the clash after a village headman and his supporters opened fire on a group of tribals over a land dispute. The Personnel Department has initiated action against Ghorawal SDM Vijay Prakash Tiwari, and an FIR will be registered against him, according to an official statement. Disciplinary action has also been initiated against Ghorawal Circle Officer Abhishek Singh, Sub-Inspector Lallan Prasad Yadav, Inspector Arvind Kumar Mishra and Constable Satyajit Yadav, it said. Even if he is alive, he will not be in a position to be charged in a case. Hence, the committee did not recommend any action against him,” Adityanath said. He said an FIR will be filed against pargana adhikari of Robertsganj in 1989 Ashok Kumar Srivastava and tehsildar Jai Chandra Singh. LA prosecutors decline sex abuse charges against Les Moonves

first_imgLOS ANGELES, Calif. – Prosecutors in Southern California declined to pursue sexual abuse claims against CBS Corp. CEO Les Moonves because the statute of limitations has expired, according to documents. The unidentified woman, who worked in the television industry, went to Los Angeles police in February to report three alleged incidents, two in 1988 and one from 1986.The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office was considering three possible criminal charges including two misdemeanours, battery and indecent exposure, and a felony, forced oral copulation, according to a charge evaluation worksheet. The document stated the woman disclosed at least one of the alleged incidents to a friend a year before filing the police report.“The applicable statutes of limitation have expired as to all three incidents,” the worksheet said.CBS declined to comment Tuesday. In an article last week in The New Yorker, six women — four of whom spoke on the record — alleged sexual harassment or misconduct by Moonves between the 1980s and late 2000s.Four of the women described forcible touching or kissing during business meetings, it says, while two said that Moonves physically intimidated them or threatened to derail their careers.Moonves acknowledged making advances that may have made women uncomfortable but said he never misused his position to harm or hinder anyone’s career. The incident reviewed by prosecutors was not mentioned in The New Yorker piece written by Ronan Farrow, who tweeted Tuesday that the incidents reviewed by prosecutors were not included in his piece.CBS said Monday that it was hiring outside counsel to investigate claims made in the article by Farrow, who wrote a Pulitzer Prize-winning story last year for the same magazine uncovering many of the allegations against Hollywood producer Harvey WeinsteinMoonves has been a towering figure in television for decades, credited with turning around a network that had been mired for years at the bottom ratings. The CBS chief is the latest media giant to become embroiled in sexual misconduct allegations since the downfall of Weinstein in October triggered the #MeToo social media movement.Moonves was the No. 2 highest paid CEO of a major public company in 2017, according to an analysis by The Associated Press and Equilar, an executive data firm. He made $68.4 million last year, behind only chip maker Broadcom’s CEO.Before joining CBS, he was president of Warner Bros. Television, where he oversaw the development of hit TV shows “Friends” and “ER.”Moonves, who is married to TV personality and CBS producer Julie Chen, was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2013.last_img read more
