first_img Watch Live DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University softball team dropped a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader to Wichita State on Saturday at Ron Buel Field. Preview Live Stats WSU added to its lead with three runs in the top of the third inning. The Shockers had three straight hits to start the frame and back-to-back doubles scored the first two runs and the final run came courtesy of a sacrifice fly as they led 5-0. Later WSU, scored two runs in the fourth inning and two in the seventh inning to complete the sweep. Full Schedule Roster Drake answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman Kennedy Frank (Chesterfield, Mo.) drew a one-out walk and junior Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Freshman Taryn Pena (Columbia, Ill.) followed with a single of her own that plated Frank. Wichita State 4/24/2016 – 12:00 PM Brittney Fortner sent a home run over the right field fence to start the first game to give WSU a quick 1-0 lead. Drake sophomore pitcher Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) worked around a pair of walks to limit the damage to the leadoff home run. Wichita State (27-18, 13-5) won by scores of 9-1 and 9-0 over Drake (24-20, 12-6 MVC). The Shockers moved into a tie for first place with UNI, who swept Missouri State today, as the Bulldogs dropped one game behind the new league leaders. The Bulldogs could only get the single run that inning as they would threaten just one more time in the game, putting runners on second and third in the second inning, but Frank hit a hard groundout to the pitcher to end the inning. In the third inning, Drake was struck by bad luck as Sowa drew a leadoff walk, but was picked off when Pena hit a rocket into the glove of the WSU third baseman, Liz Broyles, who threw out Sowa for the double play. Sophomore Kelsey Wright (Olathe, Kan.) led the Bulldogs with a pair of doubles as Pena and Sowa each had one hit. Newman took the loss for Drake as her record dropped to 17-10 overall. She allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits while striking out eight but battling command problems with seven walks. In the second game, Paige Luellen hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to give WSU a 2-0 lead. Drake nearly got a run back in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Kaitlyn Finneran (Morrison, Ill.) reached with a one-out double and then moved to third after a fly out. She was stranded after Broyles made a great diving stop to rob freshman Melissa Schlotzhauer (Pilot Grove, Mo.) of a hit. Cacy Williams increased the Shockers’ lead to 3-1 in the top of third inning with a two-run home run. Next Game: WSU ended the first game with a six-run, fifth-inning as they sent 11 batters to plate, collected six runs on four hits and one costly error by the Bulldogs that allowed two runs to score. Drake and Wichita State will finish the series Sunday with a single game at noon. Print Friendly Versionlast_img read more
