Billy McCool

first_imgRecently the name Billy McCool was mentioned during a Reds ball game. The Lawrenceburg, Indiana, native was a star reliever for the Reds for several seasons. He was the original bullet throwing lefthander before Aroldis Chapman came along. I don’t know if Bill ever reached 100mph on the gun which was very new in his heyday. Until arm problems caused him to abandon baseball, he was quite a reliever. On all baseball archives he is listed as being born in Batesville as Lawrenceburg did not have a hospital in those days. Bill is now residing in the Dayton area and was recently inducted in the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame. He was active in the Reds pitching corps in the mid 1960’s. It does not seem possible that it was 50 years ago. Can you imagine facing him in high school? Fortunately, I was out of school before he pitched for the Tigers. Aurora was the big power in the EIAC when I was in high school. The Slaybacks and the Satchwells were tough enough. Today we are waiting to see if Alex Meyer of Greensburg makes his mark in the Major Leagues. Time will tell. I understand he is in Double A.last_img read more

Drogba: This is our last chance

first_imgDidier Drogba knows the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations represents the final chance for Ivory Coast’s ‘golden generation’ to lift the coveted continental trophy. For all their talent the closest the current Elephants side have come to being crowned African champions was in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea in 2012 where they lost on penalty shootouts in the final to hand victory to Zambia. The result, however, could have been very different had Drogba coverted a penalty during the match.A similar Cote d’Ivoire side lost on penalties to hosts Egypt in Cairo in 2006 while a very differed team defeated Ghana on penalties in 1992 for their sole AFCON win.And ahead of the tournament in South Africa, the Shanghai Shenhua striker told Ivorian reporters: “Coming to South Africa for the 2013 Cup of Nations will be special for me.“We have twice come so close to winning this tournament. “But that does not mean that we can afford to slow down and assume that if we wait long enough the title will be ours. We have learnt from our failures and we are coming this time to win the title and nothing else.On paper the Elephants head into the tournament as favourites, once again, but have been drawn in a tricky group that includes former champions Algeria, 2004 winners Tunisia, and Togo. But if their record is anything to go by, the Ivorians will do well to even emerge from. Group D. They have only beaten Togo once in three meetings, played and lost to Tunisia in their one game to date, while they havce lost two from three games against Algeria.Ivory Coast Sabri Lamouchi conceded they face tough opponents but as favourites they must deliver.“It is unquestionably the most difficult group and we got three fearsome opponents,” said Lamouchi. “We were favourites before the draw and still are. Now we must deliver on the pitch.” Ivory Coast will play all their games at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg facing Togo, Tunisia and Algeria on the 22nd, 26th and 30th January in this order.last_img read more

Airbnb Bans “Party Houses” Following Fatal CA Halloween Shooting

first_imgAirbnb’s CEO says the company is already taking actions against unauthorized parties, following a deadly shooting at a Halloween party that was held at a rental home in California.Brian Chesky tweeted Saturday that his staff is expanding manual screening of “high risk” reservations, and they will remove guests who fail to comply with policies banning parties at the company’s rental homes. He added that the company is forming a “rapid response team” to address complaints of unauthorized parties. Five people died in a Halloween night shooting at a four-bedroom home which had been rented on Airbnb by a woman who allegedly told the owner that her family members had asthma and needed to escape smoke from a nearby wildfire. The owner, who was suspicious of a one-night rental on Halloween, reminded the renter that no parties were allowed, according to a source. The owner, Michael Wang, says his wife reached out to the renter on Thursday night, when neighbors contacted them about the party. He adds, “We called the police. They were on the way to go there to stop them, but before we got there the neighbor already sent us a message saying there was a shooting.”No arrests have been made, and a motive for the attack is not yet known. However, authorities found two guns at the property.Three people from the Bay Area died at the scene, while a fourth died at the hospital. In addition, Airbnb has banned the renter from its platform, and the home has been removed from its listings.last_img read more

Boca Raton businessman, Giuliani associate to comply with Trump impeachment inquiry

first_imgA dramatic turn in the impeachment inquiry may come from the possible rat’s mouth who is also from Boca Raton.Associate of Rudy Giuliani and Ukrainian-American businessman Lev Parnas is reportedly ready to work with impeachment investigators in Congress.“Mr. Parnas was very upset by President Trump’s plainly false statement that he did not know him,” Joseph A. Bondy, a new lawyer for Parnas, told The New York Times. “We are willing to comply with the subpoena to the extent that it does not violate any appropriate privilege that Mr. Parnas may properly invoke.”Parnas is described as a key figure in the inquiry into whether President Trump abused his office for political gain.Investigators believe Parnas helped Giuliani look for dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.Parnas and his business associate Igor Fruman were arrested in early October on a four-count indictment, which includes charges of conspiracy, making false statements to the Federal Election Commission, and falsification of records. Both co-defendants have plead not guilty in the case.Parnas was initially unwilling to cooperate after receiving a letter from House Democrats requesting documents and deposition in connection with the inquiry just a week before his arrest. He then hired John Dowd, a former attorney for Trump, who called the congressional requests overly broad and said Parnas would not cooperate. But Parnas seemingly had a change of heart, as well as legal representation after president Trump denied knowing him or his business associate.“I don’t know them,” Trump told reporters, according to the Times. “Maybe they were clients of Rudy.“You’d have to ask Rudy,” Trump added. It is unclear at this time whether the latest development in the impeachment inquiry will affect Trump or his administration.last_img read more

Koala rescued from Australian brushfire in viral video dies

first_imgWarning: Explicit VideoThe Koala, who received attention worldwide after a video emerged of a woman rescuing him from an Australia bushfire, has died.In recent weeks, deadly bushfires have spread throughout eastern Australia.Wildlife officials estimated the blazes had killed hundreds of koalas in the New South Wales state alone. On Nov. 20, a video of a woman walking into a bushfire to save a severely burnt koala went viral. The Koala, named Ellenborough Lewis, was found on a road before it was given water and wrapped in a blanket and then taken to the nearby Port Macquarie Koala Hospital for treatment. The animal was being treated for severe burns to his feet, chest and stomach. However, the hospital confirmed Tuesday that it decided to put Lewis to sleep because his burns were not going to get better.“We placed him under general anesthesia this morning to assess his burn injuries and change the bandages,” the hospital said in a post on Facebook.“We recently posted that ‘burn injuries can get worse before they get better,’ but in Ellenborough Lewis’s case, the burns did get worse, and unfortunately would not have gotten better,” the Facebook post added. “The Koala Hospital’s number one goal is animal welfare, so it was on those grounds that this decision was made.”Before his death, Lewis the Koala was reunited with his rescuer, Toni Doherty, who said it was her “natural instinct” to save the Koala from the fire. The Koala Hospital Port Macquarie is still working to save the lives of many animals affected by the fire.Click here to visit their Facebook page for more information.last_img read more
